One of the highlights was a lagoon cruise within Aitutaki. Our stops were as follows:
1) Aitutaki once had an outbreak of leprosy. To contain the outbreak, those who were sick from the disease were shipped off to a remote island. This island has since opened to the public. The one casualty to this is that dogs were believed to carry the leprosy disease, and therefore dogs were no longer allowed on Aitutaki. Though it is clear that dogs do not carry the disease, the practice of not owning dogs continues in this island (meanwhile, Rarotonga has a ton of dogs roaming around...). We were given a coconut demonstration here as well.
2) We stopped off in the middle of the seas, in which the water levels are only about chest deep. From there, you can snorkel to deeper waters where you can see giant clams and very friendly fish.
3) Our final destination was One Foot Island. Here, you can get your passport stamped as having been there. No visit to Aitutaki is complete without visiting this wonderful island.
